There is a part-time position at the Scranton Public Library’s book store/library, Library Express.  Library Express is located in the Marketplace @ Steamtown, 2nd floor.   Successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to cheerfully respond to customer requests, to work cooperatively in a team environment, to be flexible as the demands of the job change, and to handle the fast-pace of telephone and in-person interactions.  The schedule includes days, nights and weekends. The weekly schedule is approximately 25-30 hours. Upon hiring, child abuse and criminal background checks will be conducted in accordance with state law.  Starting hourly rate is $12.00.

The primary responsibility is to give exception customer service to all customers.  Main tasks include working at the front desk and arranging and promoting author events. This desk is the Library’s primary service point – so excellent customer service skills in this busy environment are essential.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Checking in and charging out library materials
  • Register patrons for Library cards.
  • Answer and route incoming telephone calls.
  • Sort, inspect, and shelve returned materials.
  • Assist patrons looking for material to borrow or buy in person or on the phone.
  • Assist patrons using the Online Catalog.
  • Works with cash register
  • Works with inventory software
  • Additional duties as assigned

Events responsibilities

  • Answers all inquiries for Adult Events
  • Contact and respond to authors’ request regarding book signings, book talks, etc.
  • Host First Fridays
  • Mange inventory of local author titles
  • Set up/break down for events
  • Create promotional materials for author events (Facebook, flyers, twitter)
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

  • Familiarity with and use of computers is essential.
  • Must be flexible, able to multi-task, and enjoy a steady to fast pace environment.
  • Ability to serve patrons in a calm and friendly manner.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • High school diploma or GED, college degree/library experience preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Physical ability to stand or sit for several hours.
  • Lift up to 25lbs, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, and push carts loaded with books.
  • Physical and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to listen and clearly communicate in person and on the telephone.
