Chris Phillips

Christopher Phillips will be appearing at the Albright Memorial Library on Thursday April 9 at 6:30 PM in the Reference Department on the 2nd floor. He is a bestselling author whose passion for inquiry led him to found the discussion group, Socrates’ Café. He was looking for something that would better humankind and the idea that evolved was Socratic dialogue; he began to hold dialogues with everyone who was trying to better understand human nature, discuss ideas and make a more inclusive world. In the past decade participants in this project have flourished and over 500 gatherings meet around the globe.  Phillips is currently the Network Fellow at Harvard University’s Edmund J. Safra Center for Ethics and a Senior Education Fellow at the National Constitution Center, among many other awards.

A typical group meets in a public place, libraries, cafes etc. No prior knowledge is necessary to participate and the question to be discussed each evening is voted on democratically. All ages and viewpoints are welcome and a facilitator gently guides the discussion. Today there are over 500 gatherings around the globe and they are coordinated by volunteers. The Albright Memorial Library group has been meeting for nearly a decade. His books include Socrates Café, Six Questions of Socrates, Socrates in Love and Constitution Café: Jefferson Brew for a True Revolution
