Make Summer Reading Programs @ the Library Part of their Schedule

There are only a few weeks left of the school year and that means freedom for school-age children. But, did you know that a complete separation from activities such as reading and writing could have negative effects on a child’s education?

It’s called “summer setback” or “summer slide,” and the National Summer Learning Association says that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency…over the summer months.” Students’ test scores are lower when they return to a new school year, forcing teachers to spend an average of 4-6 weeks reteaching forgotten material learned from the previous year.

The Lackawanna County Library System has the answer: It’s called “Build a Better World!” and it’s about more than just books. All summer long there are fun programs at the libraries. And they receive free admission to programs at the area’s most popular attractions, plus a free ticket to Library Night at PNC Field when they read five books.
