Zine Workshop for Teens

A few years ago, I met Chris Fritton, also known as The Itinerant Printer, and he introduced me to zines. Fast forward to me frantically researching zines and happening upon this Rookie article about them. My obsession was cemented. Fast forward yet again to last summer when I attended the Scranton Zine Fest and knew I had to do something with teens and zines.

But Renee, what is a zine? Great question, dear reader! A zine is a self-published tiny book/magazine about a subject. Here is a great article by Mental Floss summing up the history of zines.

My dream of bringing zines to teens has finally come to fruition. This Saturday, May 12, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, teens can come to the library and create their very own zine(s). No experience necessary! Teens are encouraged (but not required) to bring any of their original poetry, sketches, or ideas. All the zine-making supplies will be provided as well as examples to look through for inspiration. Everyone will leave having completed a zine and will be eligible to have their work displayed during the Scranton Zine Fest (June 1-2). There will also be a button-making machine on hand for any teens interested in creating their own swag.

Pizza and snacks will be provided, but if there are dietary restrictions or issues, teens are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

There are a few spots left so teens can call to sign up! 570.587.3440.
