Job Summary
Works under the direct supervision of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the library buildings and grounds as well as library vehicles. Performs routine maintenance tasks, oversees security of all buildings, and supervises custodial staff.

Duties and Responsibilities



Ensures that grounds are clean and well maintained in all seasons. Performs custodial/grounds cleaning tasks when necessary. Performs and coordinates snow removal when needed. Oversees and coordinates contract labor for landscaping. Grounds are defined as the following buildings in Scranton, PA; the main library at 500 Vine St., the Children’s Library at 502 Vine St., a branch library at 1032 Green Ridge St., and non-public building at 2006 N. Main Ave.

Inspects and maintains. Oversees and contracts with companies and individuals as needed for such maintenance, repair inspections and custodial work. Performs preventive, repair and custodial work when necessary. Keeps files of all warranties, maintenance contracts and scheduled maintenance plans on the buildings and equipment (with the exception of computers and printers).

Supervises a custodial staff of 3 or 4 people. Prepares monthly schedules, ensuring that buildings are adequately covered at all times. Trains staff to perform custodial and general maintenance duties.

Fleet Coordinator
Schedules regular vehicle maintenance to ensure operational efficiency. Schedules repairs as needed. Monitors driver behavior and ensure any vehicle damage is immediately reported. Maintains detailed records of vehicle servicing and inspections.

Maintains knowledge of basic safety measures in a public building. Answer alarms whenever they occur. Coordinates with alarm company and Fire Marshall to plan safety drills as needed for staff and patrons. Contracts and oversees maintenance of the security and fire alarm systems.

Assists staff with resolving issues involving problematic patron behavior.

Orders, receives, stores, and distributes maintenance supplies for buildings. Maintains order and cleanliness in the storage areas.

Processes, keeps and maintains all paperwork and records associated with the execution of above duties.

Assists CEO with the creation of and then maintains an annual budget for maintenance supplies, planned expenditures for basic maintenance of buildings and grounds, and capital improvements.

Performs other miscellaneous duties or tasks as needed.


  • Knowledge of general maintenance procedures and ability to independently accomplish tasks as needed in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to analyze jobs needs and coordinate staff to achieve objectives.
  • Understanding of the mission of a public library including its commitment to equitable access and intellectual and to the safety and well-being of patrons and staff.
  • Understanding of building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, elevator, fire and security.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing as well as via e-mail and texting.
  • Ability to use basic computer applications to keep electronic records and produce monthly reports for the CEO.
  • Ability to perform duties with a positive attitude toward members of the public and library staff.
  • Ability to deescalate tense situations and react quickly to security incidents.

Job Requirements

  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License and personal transportation.
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English.
  • Upon hire, satisfactory completion of a physical exam and substance screening test which will also be performed randomly during employment.
  • Upon hiring, child abuse and criminal background checks will be conducted in accordance with state law.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary.
  • Ability to be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and alarms.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift, lower and carry up to 50 pounds (occasionally higher) and traverse stairs.
  • Must be able to use a hand truck to push and pull up to 150 pounds (occasionally higher)
  • Ability to use hands to handle objects
  • Sit, stand or move for long periods of time; reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or bend; step in and out of a high vehicle.
  • The employee is often exposed to outside weather conditions including heat, rain and cold.
  • Ability to be in tight spaces and climb a ladder.


  • Starting salary is between $38,000-42,000 depending on experience.
