The Scranton Public Libary is currently looking to hire a full-time Van Driver.

Summary:

This position provides safe, efficient and courteous transportation and delivery of library materials to a variety of District library stops. The employee drives the vehicle and delivers and sorts materials while at the various sites throughout Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Pike, Wayne and Wyoming counties.  The position includes physical operations and preventive maintenance of the vehicle.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following list is representative of the typical duties and responsibilities performed in this position.  The employee’s actual duties and responsibilities may vary depending on department needs and individual assignments.

  • Drive the van to and from stops according to a predetermined route and on a time schedule determined by the District Consultant.
  • Sort library materials at each van stop in order to maintain the flow of materials between all district libraries.
  • Load and off-load the vehicle.
  • Transport and distribute materials to other departments as needed.
  • Maintain a good relationship with library staff and co-workers.
  • Keep accurate statistics according to established library procedures.
  • Work with the Head of the Maintenance Department on vehicle maintenance including but not limited to filling out daily written logs, troubleshooting mechanical problems, and scheduling repairs.
  • Participate in the overall neatness of the van by straightening items and performing light housekeeping tasks.
  • Follow all procedures, policies and protocols established by the Scranton Public Library.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License;
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record;
  • Upon hiring, child abuse and criminal background checks will be conducted in accordance with state law;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and think independently while on the road;
  • Good organizational and time management skills;
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English;
  • Upon hire, satisfactory completion of a physical exam and substance screening test which will also be performed randomly during employment;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of personal computers;
  • Must be able to use cell phone applications such as mapping and payroll applications;
  • Must be able to communicate via cell phone texting applications;
  • Experience working as a Delivery Driver is preferred;
  • Experience driving a 14’ box truck is preferred;
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that may be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to keep up with a physical, fast-paced work environment in a timely manner.  The employee is regularly required to speak and hear at a conversational level; use hands to handle objects; sit, stand or move for long periods of time; reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or bend; step in and out of a high vehicle.  The employee is frequently required to lift, lower and carry up to 30 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds) and traverse stairs.  The employee must be able to use a hand truck to push and pull up to 150 pounds.  Employee will have to pass a yearly “fit to work” physical.

The employee is often exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee will wear library-approved clothing and outerwear at all times. While the vehicle is climate controlled, inherent limitations exist which can cause discomfort.  In addition, exposure to the elements will occur while preparing for the run (loading and unloading) and during site setup.

Starting rate is between $14.34-15.77 and based on experience.  Full time starting benefits include 2 weeks vacation, 6 personal days, paid sick days and 10 paid holidays. Medical, dental and vision insurance are all provided with a $0 premium for individual coverage. The library also offers up to a 5% match on retirement contributions.
