 The Nancy Kay Holmes Branch Library of the Scranton Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and creative person to connect with children and their families through diverse library programming. Must enjoy working with children, families, and others who work with children. This full-time position also includes working at the library’s circulation desk performing clerical duties.  The Dunmore and Green Ridge community is the primary focus of this branch. Flexibility in availability is essential. The weekly schedule will include some evening shifts and may eventually include weekends.

 Children’s Programming Coordinator: General statement of duties

 Plan and conduct programs and events for children from birth through school age and their families, which includes literature-based and STEAM programs.

  • Create and introduce new library programs based on current trends, and interests and needs of the library patron.
  • Schedule and organize various special events throughout the month.
  • Promote events through fliers, local publications, and word of mouth.
  • Conduct and promote the Summer and Winter Reading Clubs.
  • Provide community outreach activities to new and non-traditional library users of all ages.
  • Facilitate special projects as needed.
  • Attend workshops and other training to improve job performance.
  • Work collaboratively with the Lackawanna County Children’s Library.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Library Clerk: General statement of duties

 Performs full range of circulation desk duties, including issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, reserving books, collecting fines, answering the phone, pulling the daily pull list, making copies, and promoting library events.

  • Assist patrons in locating needed material and demonstrate how to use the library’s search tools. These include computer terminals, personal computers, computer-based media, and the on-line catalogue.
  • Orders Interlibrary Loan items for patrons.
  • Keeps shelves properly organized, assists with shelving materials when needed, and assists with creating attractive seasonal displays.

 Skills, Knowledge and Requirements:

  • Establishes and maintains a high customer service performance standard.
  • Understands computers and a variety of mobile devices.
  • Works in a pleasant and effective manner with patrons, co-workers, and volunteers.
  • Works independently, takes initiative, and successfully completes duties.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Prior library experience is a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED is required (college degree preferred, but not required).

 Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to sit for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to do computer work for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to reach, twist, bend, kneel or crouch.
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs and push and pull book carts containing up to 100lbs of library materials.
  • Physical and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to listen and clearly communicate in person, by email and telephone, and via remote teleconferencing services.

 Upon hiring, child abuse and criminal clearances will be conducted in accordance with state law. 

 Starting rate is between $15.32-16.85 and based on experience.  Full time starting benefits include 2 weeks’ vacation, personal days, sick days, and paid holidays. Medical, dental and vision insurance or, if coverage is waived, then a stipend is given. The library also offers up to a 5% match on retirement contributions.  Plus, more benefits not listed.
