Colson Whitehead Lecture Gets New Date

Thursday, April 18  /  7 P.M.  /  Scranton Cultural Center

Colson Whitehead, the American novelist whose bestselling book, Underground Railroad, won the National Book Award in 2016 and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2017, will deliver the Lackawanna County Library System’s American Masters Lecture which was postponed last November because of a snowstorm.

“We want to thank Mr. Whitehead for being so accommodating when snow virtually closed the area down last fall,” said Mary Garm, library system administrator. “More than 900 people reserved seats for that event, and we expect a large audience in April.”

Anyone who had tickets for the November lecture will have to reserve new tickets for the rescheduled date.

Whitehead has published six novels and two works of non-fiction, but it is The Underground Railroad that catapulted him into the ranks of leading American authors.

“Mr. Whitehead’s books tell stories that are uniquely American in a voice that is strong and courageous,” Mrs. Garm added. “He is also a wonderful speaker. He will add to the rich tradition that has been established here for offering people in our community the opportunity to hear some of the best minds in America.”

Tickets for the event will be free, as they have been since the series began, and are available online and at Lackawanna County libraries.
