Zoom Virtual Event.

Designed to engage children in grades 3-6, Novel Thoughts introduces a variety of literature and involves children in activities that coincide with each session provided. We carefully select from classic stories, fables, popular series, graphic novels, and comics. Children benefit from the literary experience as well as the interactive participation incorporated into each session.

This fall, Ms. O’Handley will be talking about the 3 great books!

“Hilo: Gina, the Girl who Broke the World” by Judd Winick
Tuesdays, October 5 & 12 at 6 PM

Hilo’s back! Introducing an exciting, brand new epic story arc starring Gina in the New York Times bestselling graphic novel series that kids and critics love!

Hundreds of years ago magically disappeared from Earth. At least…until now! Because suddenly, giant magical beings are appearing and only Gina can see them. Not to mention, Gina can somehow do magic herself. Magic is powerful. But it can also be dangerous. With DJ and Hilo’s help, can Gina figure out how to protect the magical beings from the creatures who are after them? And how to use her magic to become who she was always meant to be? And can she do it without putting the entire planet in jeopardy?!

“Quest” by Aaron Becker & “Wolf in the Snow” by Matthew Cordell
Tuesdays November 9 & 16 at 6 PM

In this session of Novel Thoughts, we will explore the richness of wordless books. Wordless picture books are told entirely through their illustrations — they are books without words, or sometimes just a few words. They provide an opportunity for literacy-rich conversations. Each “reader” listens and speaks and creates their own story in their own words. Sharing wordless books also reinforces the idea that, in many books, the story and the pictures are connected.

“Quest” is a fantasy/adventure book, of a Girl with the Red Chalk and the Boy with the Purple Chalk, who venture off into an unknown world to find themselves faced with trying to rescue different colored markers to complete a map they were given by a king.

“Wolf in the Snow” is a simple yet powerful story of how a girl’s kindness is repaid by the wolf pack, which helps reunite the girl and her mother. The story is both gentle and brave, showing kindness, compassion, and respect for the natural world.

For grades 3-6.
