Beginning Wednesday, July 30th, Albright Memorial Library will be presenting a weekly classic film series dedicated to the “Ladies of Pre-Code Hollywood.”  This series of five classic films — starring legendary actresses Barbara Stanwyck, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo in some of their greatest and most controversial film roles of their careers — will be shown in the Community Room, located in the basement of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library.

In 1930, Hollywood adopted a Production Code to self-regulate the contents of its films; HOWEVER, it wasn’t fully enforced until 1934.  Those four years produced some of the most shocking and provocative films ever made—murderers went free, adultery was flaunted, promiscuity was celebrated, and guilt was frivolous.  This library film series celebrates the leading ladies of the pre-Code era.

Wednesday, July 30th at 6 PM (SPECIAL TIME) — BABY FACE (1933) starring Barbara Stanwyck, followed by the hour-long documentary Thou Shalt Not: Sex, Sin and Censorship in Pre-Code Hollywood

Wednesday, August 6th at 7 PM —  I’M NO ANGEL (1933) starring Mae West

Wednesday, August 13th at 7 PM —  DANCE, FOOLS, DANCE (1931) starring Joan Crawford

Wednesday, August 20th at 7 PM — THE DIVORCEE (1930) starring Norma Shearer

Wednesday, August 27th at 7 PM — QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933) starring Greta Garbo

Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Friends of Scranton Public Library.

All films are free with your library card, but seating is limited; therefore, registration is suggested.
