Engineering for Kids

April 15, 2015

Engineering can be fun, and easy. There are simple ways for kids to get involved in engineering. Below are several sites offering project ideas, as well as information on engineering for kids.

Build a watercraft, a rubberband car or a paper table. Play games practicing engineering concepts. Or learn about how to become an engineer. Resources to get you started are below.

Engineer Girl
http://www.engineergirl.org/
Engineering is not just for boys. Engineer Girl was created to show there are “exciting opportunities that engineering represents for girls and women.” The website was designed with the help of a Girls Advisory Board with members from around the United States and Canada. Girls can learn about women engineers and projects they were involved in as well as learn about how to become an engineer, and clubs and programs to help you learn more and get more involved in engineering.

PBS Design Squad Nation: Build

PBS includes instructions for activities using simple materials like paperclips, straws, paper cups, and rubber bands. Each activity is given a difficulty level of easy, medium or hard to help you choose one that is right for you. At the end of the instructions is a real world application (Did You Know?) of the activity, and suggestions for expanding the activity. PBS also has online engineering games for kids @ http://pbskids.org/games/engineering/.
