Hoopla Service Ending on November 1
October 1, 2025
Unfortunately, the Lackawanna County Library System will no longer provide access to Hoopla effective Saturday, November 1. The Northeast Pennsylvania Digital Library consortium, which includes all Lackawanna County libraries as well as libraries in Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties, has made the difficult decision to end their contract with Hoopla due to rising financial costs.
Although Hoopla is free for our patrons to use, it operates on a “pay-per-use” model. This means that the Library is charged a fee each time a patron borrows an item. Libraries around the country are finding this model unsustainable and consequently choosing to discontinue these services. Our decision to cancel Hoopla is driven by increased popularity, tighter budgets, and rising pricing models from publishers. These issues have been further compounded by Pennsylvania’s budget impasse, which has left the consortium without crucial funding for library resources since July.
Lackawanna County Library System patrons can continue to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and comics using the Libby app; Kanopy also offers films, series, documentaries, and shorts for streaming. Our Libraries are committed to providing high-quality resources to our communities and will continue to grow our digital offerings to meet your needs. Please contact your Library with any questions or for more information about our digital offerings.
