Celebrate Earth Day with your Library

Celebrate Earth Day with your Library

April 1, 2026

Since the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, April 22 has been a day of action to protect the planet we call home. Whether it is through education, advocacy, or organizing, our communities work together every day to preserve our environment. During times of uncertainty and threats to our climate, we can all come together to help find solutions that conserve resources and preserve the Earth for future generations.

In 2026, Earth Day organizers call on people of all backgrounds and generations to show their love for our environment with the theme Our Power, Our Planet. Clean air, safe water, and a sustainable climate are not optional luxuries: they are essentials we all deserve access to and can help protect.

Environmental protection happens when each of us contribute a small part. Events like community cleanups, park beautifications, and educational sessions will be held all month long in celebration. There are plenty of ways to get involved, including tree planting programs, investing in more sustainable clothing, or researching more about how Pennsylvania’s legislature is addressing the climate crisis.

At the Lackawanna County Library System, we encourage you to learn more about our environment and to celebrate the planet throughout the month of April. Check out one of these selections below to learn more about conservation and the climate whether you enjoy fiction or nonfiction titles. We also have a variety of digital resources that can help you research and educate yourself about environmental issues including GreenFILE and Gale eBooks.
