Fabulous Female Authors

If you need something different to read this summer, try these seven female authors. Each bring their own unique voice and experiences and each book can be found in the library system. Happy reading and let us know what you think!
7. The Comet Seekers by Helen Sedgwick
Atmospheric in every sense of the word, this book is a sprawling exploration of love, family, and celestial happenings. A beautiful, enthralling read which captivated me from start to finish.
6. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
A wonderful collection of poetry (and some prose) exploring survival, womanhood, love, and loss. Feel free to pick this book up and then put it down and come back to it later. Divided into four sections, it highlights important moments throughout a woman’s life.
5. The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner
Revolution, art, 1970s New York – what’s not to love? Spanning America and Italy, this novel follows a young woman as she comes into her own and forges her way in the world. A quick, but intense read.
4. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This is a must-read for every American. Adichie’s novel explores immigration, expectations, relationships, and blackness in America, England, and beyond. It’s a stunning, honest read.
3. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
If you need a break from novel-reading, check out this graphic novel instead. It follows Satrapi as she grows up during the Islamic Revolution and then the Iran-Iraq war. Make sure to read the sequel, Persepolis 2, as well!
2. The White City by Karolina Ramqvist
A dark, sparsely written novel which echoes the landscape of Sweden where it’s set. This translated novel is haunting and moving and is an intense look at loneliness and motherhood. If you are looking for a read you can’t put down, this is it!
1. Modern Lovers by Emma Straub
This was one of my favorite books of last year. It is a intimate look at relationships and family and how friendships change and evolve over time. Straub creates a beautiful story and easily engages the reader in the lives of the characters. A perfect summer read. Straub also owns “Books Are Magic”, a bookstore in Brooklyn, NY.
