Have Fun with Poetry for Kids: A Help Yourself Activity Station

In honor of National Poetry Month in April the Carbondale Public Library will have several Help Yourself Activities for kids inspired by Shel Silvertstein’s poetry books.

Make a Word Lib
♦ Group Make a Word Lib: Children can fill out tickets with a word from the part of speech listed on the ticket. Words will be picked at random, and the completed Word Lib will be posted at the library on April 30th.
♦ Create Your Own Word Lib: Children can use the provided handout to create their own silly Word Lib story.

Create Your Own Poem: Children can create their own poem using words from “Giraffe and a Half.”

Illustrations & Poetry
♦ Draw Your Own (April 2nd – April 14th): Draw a picture based on the selected short poems.
Match Game (April 16th – April 28th): Read the short poems, and match them with the illustrations.
