Frankenstein – Scranton Reads 2019

August 22, 2019

The Abington Community Library will be participating in  Scranton Reads 2019.  Scranton Reads is a community reading event organized by the City of Scranton and the Scranton Public Library. Each year during the month of October, local citizens get together to read a great work of literature. They participate in book discussions and special events related to the chosen work. Scranton Reads has two main goals. The first goal is to encourage reading among people of all ages. The second goal is to bring the community together through sharing a common experience.

Scranton Reads is pleased to announce its 2019 selection:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

frankenstein

First published in 1818, Frankenstein is considered an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres. The novel follows science student Victor Frankenstein as his obsession with discovering the cause of generation of life leads him to bestow animation upon a lifeless matter and create a human being made from stolen body parts. Horrified by the physical appearance of his creation, Frankenstein abandons the human being. Fueled by isolation and loneliness, the once innocent being turns to violence and releases a murderous campaign against its creator – Frankenstein.

Frankenstein has spawned many film adaptations – 28 and counting – and continues to influence pop culture through visual art, performances, and film.

Join us at the Abington Community Library on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:30 PM.  A free copy of this book is available to the first 10 people who sign up at the library for this discussion.
