Happy Hanukkah!
December 17, 2019
Festival of Lights / Sunday, December 22 to Monday, December 30
Hanukkah began on Sunday with the lighting of the first of eight candles commemorating the rededicating of the Temple of Jerusalem following the rebellion of the Maccabees against the Seleucid Empire in the second century BCE. It continues through next Monday.
While it is a holiday marked by songs, games and the giving of gifts, its true meaning is symbolized by the nightly lighting of the Menorah commemorating the miracle that allowed the Temple lamp to burn for eight days with only a one-day supply of oil.
