Lackawanna County Libraries Go for the Gold

100% Gold Star Achievement Is First In State
The Lackawanna County Library System was honored at the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 2019 Annual Conference in Erie in late October for being the first library system in the Commonwealth to have to have all its libraries achieve Gold Star status.
The Star program is an initiative of the Library Association to get libraries in the state focused on the literacies patrons need as citizens of the 21st Century
These have been identified as Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy and Financial Literacy – the pillars of PA Forward, a PLA initiative.
Libraries earn recognition in the Star program by focusing programming and activities on these key literacies.
“Each Library worked hard to achieve Gold Star status, demonstrating once again the tremendous responsibility that Lackawanna County libraries accept in serving our communities,” said Mary Garm, System Director.
There are 10 libraries in the System: Abington Community Library, Albright Memorial Library, Nancy Kay Holmes Branch Library, Carbondale Public Library, Dalton Community Library, North Pocono Public Library, Taylor Community Library, Valley Community Library, Library Express, and the Lackawanna County Children’s Library, plus the Lackawanna County Library System Bookmobile.
It is a confederated system in which each Library is independent with its own board and staff.
“It is another example of the collaboration our libraries practice in serving the people of Lackawanna County where a single Library Card is the key to programs, services, and a huge joint collection at any Library in the System,” Mrs. Garm added.
