Piper Kerman, who went from drug trafficker to bestselling author of Orange Is the New Black, and Emmy Award winner for the Netflix television program of the same name, is coming to Scranton as part of the Lackawanna County Library System’s Matthew F. Flynn Library Lecture Series.
Subtitled My Year in a Women’s Prison, the book chronicles 13 months the author spent in the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut after her conviction for money laundering related to a brief experience with drug trafficking when she was in her early twenties.
On the strength of its performance as a book, Orange Is the New Black was turned into a Netflix series by Jenji Kohan and has gone on to win both Emmy and Peabody awards.
