Read with Pride this June
June 1, 2025
During Pride Month, we celebrate stories of courage, identity, and love. Everyone is welcome and belongs at the Library, and during this celebration of the LGBTQ+ community we encourage you to stop by your Library to find something that inspires you.
Modern celebrations of Pride are said to begin with the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969, when members of the community stood up to a police raid at the famous Stonewall Inn in New York City. In the years that have followed, thousands of LGTBQ+ people gather each June to demonstrate for equal rights and to honor those who have fought for equality and acceptance. Though marriage equality between same-sex and queer couples was legalized in 2015, struggles still persist today. In the face of censorship, discrimination, and misinformation, Pride Month follows in its tradition as a protest, highlighting the rich history, humanity, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBTQ+ people have lived, loved, created, thrived, and resisted since the beginning of human existence. This month, we want to spotlight some items from our collection that bring the community from the margins into the mainstream. Browse our catalog to find a new read to celebrate Pride, or contact your local Library for more recommendations.
