The 1930 film classic The Divorcee, starring Norma Shearer, will be screened Wednesday, August 20th at 7 PM in the Community Room (basement of Lackawanna County Children’s Library), as part of the library’s  “Ladies of Pre-Code” film series.

Known as the first film to test the 1930 Production Code, The Divorcee stars Norma Shearer (who won an Oscar for her role) as Jerry, a graphic designer, who one-ups her unfaithful husband (Chester Morris) by sleeping with his best friend (Robert Montgomery).  While he believes his own affair “doesn’t mean a thing,” Jerry’s husband views her infidelity as unforgivable, demonstrating a double standard that is as relevant today as it was 84 years ago.

The Divorcee will be preceded by a series of classic Looney Tunes shorts, including the late Lauren Bacall-inspired “Bacall to Arms“, from 6:30 PM to 7 PM.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Scranton Public Library.

All films in the series are free with your library card, but registration is suggested.
