Make the Most of your Summer at the Library
July 1, 2024
The month of July can bring on the hottest days of the summer months, and with the sunshine and warm temperatures comes plenty of opportunities for fun. For some, this means enjoying a pool or a body of water, vacationing to take full advantage of the season, enjoying their favorite hobbies, or simply staying inside to enjoy the air conditioning. With the dog days of summer upon us, it’s important to fight boredom and keep your mind engaged while you’re beating the heat. Here at the Library, we want to encourage you to keep learning and trying new things even when the summer heat is oppressive, and we can provide you with plenty of resources to make the most of your summer!
As always, the Library has books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, board games, and puzzles that you can borrow to help you escape to a new world, explore a new story, or educate yourself of a new topic. The Scranton Public Library also has a Library of Things collection that includes plenty of activities that can be borrowed and enjoyed such as corn hole boards, a croquet set, a gardening kit, yard dice, a Nintendo Switch Lite, portable speakers, sports balls, building blocks, and more. Your library card gets you access to more than just books, and we encourage you to take advantage of everything your local Library has to offer! Check out our online catalog to search for more.
During the summer, our eBook and eAudiobook collections make it even easier to keep up with your favorite authors and series while you’re on the go. Our digital catalog on Libby has thousands of titles to choose from no matter what you like to read. Your Lackawanna County Library System library card also provides 5 borrows per month using hoopla, which includes eBooks, eAudiobooks, comics, music, and more. To stream films, documentaries, television series on the go or at home, log in to Kanopy. These collections are all free of charge to residents of Lackawanna County. If you don’t yet have a library card or need to renew your membership, use our online form.
We also have plenty of online resources to keep you busy, whether it’s by learning a new skill, doing some research, or preparing for the upcoming school year. If you’re looking to try out a new handcraft, from sewing to woodworking to cake decorating, Craft & Hobby has plenty of video tutorials to help you learn a new skill. If you want to delve into your family history and learn more about your ancestors, the Library offers plenty of support for genealogical research. We’ve also recently added back issues of National Geographic magazine from 1888 through 2020 and Time from 1923 to 2000. You can also check out LearningExpress if you’re looking to build skills for job interviews, college entrance exams, a GED test, or just want to keep building your skills. These eResources are great tools to help beat boredom and continue to learn no matter what stage of life you find yourself in.
