January is National Hobby Month
January 2, 2025
Do you have a favorite thing you like to do to pass the time? Every January marks National Hobby Month, a chance to celebrate your favorite hobbies and maybe even try a new one. A hobby can be many things, from crafting projects like knitting to playing an instrument to outdoor recreation like hiking. Once associated with childish pursuits of leisure and fun, today we take pride in our hobbies as enriching, productive, and lucrative ways to spend our free time.
During January, why not take some time to celebrate your favorite activities or even try something new? The Lackawanna County Library System is here to support you in all facets of your life, including your hobbies. Whether it’s cooking, gardening, sewing, writing, woodworking, or—our favorite—reading, we can help you get started with a new activity this month. Search our online catalog for books, DVDs, CDs, kits, and more. Some Libraries also have Library of Things collections. These collections allow you to borrow all kinds of equipment and tools to try new hobbies. Search “Library of Things” in the catalog to find these items.
In addition to books, your library card grants you access to a world of online resources. Looking to grow your family tree or do some research into your ancestry? We have several genealogy databases to help you with your online searches. If you’re a history buff and want to dive into a new era this winter, check out our National Geographic or Time archives for decades worth of research and articles. You can also visit Craft & Hobby for tutorials, classes, and projects for a variety of different hobbies. Visit our eResources page for a full list of online databases.
In addition, our Libraries all host exciting programs that can teach you a new skill or connect you with your community. Visit our events directory to find a program near you and explore a new activity this month. Our librarians are always happy to help you find a new activity or connect you with resources. Feel free to contact your local Library for more information or with any questions you might have.
