Creative Writing and Memoir Writing Class

The Creative Writing Series will be held on Wednesdays from 10 AM-12 PM on Sept 9- Oct. 28. Creative Writing: Everyone has a head full of story ideas, perhaps even full fledged stories that have never have actually been put on paper. In this class, you will learn how to overcome the blocks that keep you from turning those ideas into reality. You will also learn how to distill those ideas into stories using description, characterization, dialogue and plotting. Email KAndrews@albright.org to register for this Zoom program.

The Memoir Writing Series will be held on Wednesdays from 1-3 PM on Sept 9- Oct. 28. Students in this class will be mining their own lives or those of family members to turn memories into stories using all the techniques of good fiction writing. We will also discuss the differences between fiction and nonfiction and consider what is necessary to make a personal memoir into a story or book that appeals to a more general audience. Email KAndrews@albright.org to register for this Zoom program.

September Is Library Card Signup Month

Wonder Woman Steps Up

During this COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of people discovered that library cards are useful far beyond the walls of libraries themselves. In the past few months, the downloading of eBooks and eAudiobooks has soared, our virtual library, www.lclshome.org, has seen visits to online resources increase dramatically, and patrons in large numbers have viewed Facebook Live, Instagram, and Zoom programs presented by Lackawanna County libraries.

Yes, a library card is a powerful tool and this year Wonder Woman, one of the world’s greatest superheroes, will promote Library Card Sign Up Month all across America to encourage everyone to get the card that library patrons value so highly.

Since you receive Live & Learn in Lackawanna County, you already know this, so how about telling others why they should sign up for a Library Card.

  • There are 10 libraries in Lackawanna County and a library card opens the doors to all of them. Wherever you live or work, there is a library just minutes away. All have free Wi-Fi, a computer, when you need one, and the research help from qualified librarians.
  • As you would expect, we also have books, magazines, newspapers, professional journals – whatever you need or want you can find in Lackawanna County Library System’s combined collection of more than 500,000 items. And if we don’t have it, we can probably get it for you from another library through Interlibrary Loan.
  • Access the Library from your home or office via lclshome.org. It’s a virtual library open 24/7. From academic research to auto mechanics, eBooks to business information, and more, lclshome.org is a site that you will use frequently, but you need a Library Card to take advantage of its best features.
  • Download e-books and eAudiobooks for free from lclshome.org – Library Card required.
  • During normal times, Lackawanna County libraries are among the busiest places in our communities. Before COVID-19, Lackawanna County libraries logged more than 750,000 visitors every year. Even with restriction in place due to the pandemic, libraries are seeing an increase in traffic every day.

Signing up is easy. Just send this link to a relative or friend and share the benefits of the Card.

A Museum Adventure in Art Presented by the Everhart Museum

Each summer the Everhart Museum visits each library to do a program for kids. Since we aren’t doing programs in our libraries the Everhart Museum shared one of their programs with us.

Take an art journey through the story of Hiroto, a young fisherman from Kanagawa, Japan, on his first fishing expedition.

Fishermen in Japan would record their fish with ink and fabric. Try this version with Swedish fish instead of a real fish.

  • Gyotaku Print
  • Modification: The instructions call for a brayer and ink tray. A paintbrush and paperplate or similar materials can be used instead.

Lackawanna County Libraries Are All Gold Star Libraries

Still the First In State

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the staffs of Lackawanna County libraries got busy figuring out how to deliver quality programming and useful information even while the buildings themselves were closed by state mandate.

Patrons responded by downloading eBooks and eAudiobooks in record numbers, attending Facebook Live and Zoom events conducted by library staffers from around the county, and by using the free online resources available from our virtual library, lclshome.org.

The Library System also made Live & Learn in Lackawanna County, our email newsletter, a daily publication to provide important health updates, links to useful resources, and announcements about virtual programs.

This response to an unprecedented public health crisis is an example of how the Lackawanna County Library System became the first system in the state to achieve the Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward Gold Star status.

The Gold Star program is an initiative of the Library Association to get libraries in the state focused on the literacies patrons need as citizens of the 21st Century.

These have been identified as Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy and Financial Literacy – the pillars of PA Forward, a PaLA initiative.

Libraries earn recognition in the Star program by focusing programming and activities on these key literacies. All 10 of Lackawanna County’s libraries earned their gold star, which led to the Library Association’s recognition of the System as a whole.

It is still the only system in the state to hold that honor.

“Libraries in Lackawanna County have a long history of collaboration in serving residents of our communities,” said Mary Garm, System administrator. “Responding to the pandemic was another example of how we excel.”
