New Program! Cruise into Kindergarten

The Scranton Public Library takes its role in the early childhood community seriously. Children’s
development in the years between birth and Kindergarten is impacted greatly by loving
relationships and stimulating young minds through play. We acknowledge and support families
as a child’s first teacher. Over the decades, the Lackawanna County Children’s Library has
offered a wide range of programs for children, families and those working with children by
building stronger relationships through engaging activities. The Lackawanna County Children’s
Library offers early literacy programs such as Mother Goose Lap Rap, Tales for Tots, and Pre-K
Storytime. The Block Party program addresses literacy as well as STEAM components for the
preschoolers and younger.
The library recognizes the importance of early literacy and learning experiences through
creative play, cooperative learning, and activities that stimulate the imagination. Working with
United Way and its Grade Level Reading by Third Grade initiative and with the aid of the
Scranton School District, the Lackawanna County Children’s Library will be offering a new
Kindergarten readiness program. The Children’s Library has received materials from The Office
of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Play K programs, Cruise into Kindergarten, for
children and their caregivers through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant. The Play K
curriculum allows children entering Kindergarten in the fall to “play Kindergarten” using
materials from different “playscapes”. Children will practice activities centered around a theme
that are aligned with the PA Learning Standards and Kindergarten readiness skills such as using
scissors, going over a calendar, imaginative play activities, and taking turns.
Cruise into Kindergarten will begin April 4. This six week session will be for children
entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2017 who have not attended preschool.

Registration is required and limited to 12 children.
