Scranton Reads Kicks Off!

It’s October! Halloween is coming, Fall is in full swing and we’re celebrating Scranton Reads!

Each year,  the Scranton Reads Committee selects a book or author to share with the community.  We hope that you pick up a copy at your local library or one of events during the month of October.  The goal is to get everyone in Scranton to read the same book.  This year we are reading the short stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe!

There are lots of fun and educational programs this year. Check out the full calendar of events:

Kick Off Event

Tuesday, October 7th at 7pm – in the Periodicals Room at the Albright Memorial Library RSVP

Join us for a wake celebrating Edgar Allan Poe including a funeral exhibit by the Dearly Departed Players, a reading of The Raven, Dominick Azzarelli as Poe and light refreshment.

“Adventures with Poe” a Discussion with Richard Kopley 

Tuesday, October 14th at Noon – in the K. Bruce Sherbine Lounge at Penn State Worthington Scranton RSVP

A discussion with Poe expert Richard Kopley about his life with Poe and a tale of literary detection. With emphasis on The Murders in the Rue MorgueThe Mystery of Marie RogetThe Purloined Letter and The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.

Horror, Revenge, and Death: Reflections on Poe

Wednesday, October 15th at 7pm – in the Comerford Theater at Marywood University

Come hear about Poe from the perspectives of Religion, Psychology, and Philosophy in such stories as The Tell Tale Heart, and
The Pit and the PendulumRSVP

Movie Night: The Pit and the Pendulum

Friday, October 17th at 7pm – in Room 305 in the Weinberg Memorial Library at the University of Scranton RSVP

Join us for a screening of The Pit and the Pendulum followed by a discussion led by Kevin Norris of the University of Scranton.

Poe and the Modern Crime Scene

Wednesday, October 22nd at 7pm – the 5th floor of Seeley Hall at Lackawanna CollegeRSVP

A presentation by Sgt. Michael Flanagan discussing modern day crime scene techniques and how they compare to how
detectives worked in Poe’s short stories.

An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe

Wednesday, October 29th at 7pm – in Collegiate Hall in Reddington Hall at the University of Scranton

Albright Memorial Library’s Teen Action Board presents an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe, including poetry and a stage
adaptation of Poe’s iconic Tell Tale Heart. RSVP

Funeral and Mourning Exhibit

throughout September and October – Lackawanna County Historical Society

The Lackawanna County Historical Society will have a funeral and mourning exhibit on display throughout the months of September and October.

Poe Instagram Contest

entire month of October

Take pictures at our events or of you or others reading Poe throughout the month of October and share on Instagram using the hashtag #PoeScranton. A winner will be chosen at the end of the month to receive a Poe prize package!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark!

Thursday, October 23rd at 6pm – at the Lackawanna County Children’s Library RSVP

Bring a flash light and be prepared to read “scary” stories and poems by authors Edgar Allan Poe, Alvin Schwartz, Jack Prelutsky and David San Souci. For students grades 4, 5 & 6.
