Event Details

Join local author Melissa Zabower as she discusses her book In The Shadow Of Mr. Lincoln and highlights how history is not a boring, date-laden topic but rather a series of stories. Everyone has a story, and when we look at history that way, it becomes fascinating and exciting. This program is generously sponsored by the Abington Heights Civic League. Ms. Zabower will be raffling off a book and poster during her program. Teens and adults receive one raffle ticket for attending; adults/teens who come together receive four tickets. Call to register or stop in! Open to teens in grades 7-12 and adults.

About In the Shadow of Mr. Lincoln/ Introduction

Melissa grew up in the Lehigh Valley. From her front porch she could see miles of golden wheat fields, across the train tracks that ran less than fifty feet in front of her house. Melissa has always been fascinated by the Civil War. As she read and learned, she realized her understanding of this part of history was filled with misconceptions. The more she read about the Lehigh Valley in particular, the more characters began to take shape in her mind, and the story was born. But that was just the beginning; she researched for seven years, wrote for three, and let the story sit for a full 10 years before she decided to self-publish. During that time, she also moved to NEPA, to attend college at Baptist Bible College, now CSU, and then to teach fifth and sixth grade at The Geneva School. The Geneva School has closed, and she no longer teaches; she works at Penn Foster, not as a teacher, but she still has the privilege of helping others further their education, something she is passionate about. She attends and is very active in Parker Hill Church. She also enjoys taking a cup of coffee and a book to Lackawanna State Park, to read and sit by the lake.

Melissa loves history, and many of her works reflect that. She is currently editing a second novel, set in western Colonial Pennsylvania, and she is researching a third novel, set right here in NEPA during the coal mine era.
