Check out a SAD lamp at the Library

If you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder you are not alone.  Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons.  SAD typically begins and ends at about the same time every year.  Some symptoms include feeling depressed, losing interest in activities you once enjoyed and low energy, just to name a few.

To combat SAD, light therapy can be used.  Light Therapy, or spending time around SAD lamps may counteract the disorder.  The library has two lamps; one in the quiet reading room and another in the main library for patron use.  There are two additional lamps that can be checked out and taken home by using your library card.  Stop by the library today and see if a SAD lamp can help you.

Books & Bites

Welcome to our newest book club! We’ll discuss a selected book while eating and enjoying specially curated food. The food featured and provided by a staff facilitator will relate to the book in some sense, whether it be linked to the geography of the book or a food item a character enjoys. Please notify staff in advance if you have and allergies or dietary needs.

Our next book discussion will focus on Let the Great World Spin: A Novel by Colum McCann and will be on Monday, December 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at the Abington Community Library.

Exciting New Feature Coming to Libby

We love the Libby app here at the Lackawanna County Library System because of how easy it makes it to check-out and download ebooks and audiobooks using your library card. If you’re not already using it, download it now to get reading!

Coming soon in 2020 is a new feature that enables users to suspend a hold even after it becomes available. If you place a hold and later, when you receive the notification that it’s available, decide you simply don’t have time to read it at that point in time, you will have the option to suspend the hold. This means that you won’t lose your place in line; the item will be passed to the next person and after the suspension period (that you get to set!), you will receive the next available item.

This option is always available when checking out physical materials at any of the libraries in the county, so we are so pleased it will be an option soon on Libby. Stay tuned for more information on that feature rolling out in 2020.

A loving dedication.

On Saturday, November 16, 1 PM: A presentation of a gift to the Abington Community Library from the Lackawanna Audubon Society will take place. The gift is in memory of Lois Jean Gallagher. For over 40 years, Lois Jean was a volunteer beginning at the store front (at the present site of Young Funeral Home parking lot), next stop was School Street, and then to the present location on the Morgan Highway. Over these years she assisted in many different tasks until her illness forced her from continuing. A long time member of the Lackawanna Audubon Society (the cookie baker), it was decided by the Board of Directors that this gift would be a permanent reminder of her two favorites after family and church … birding and library. It is with a grateful heart that we, at Abington Community Library, accept this gift and look forward to thanking The Gallagher Family in person. Please join us.
