Alzheimer’s Outreach

Since February, the Abington Community Library has been providing outreach services to a local Alzheimer’s unit. Knowing that some Alzheimer patients can recall stories that they heard as children, we often read fairy tales such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Little Red Riding Hood.  We found that the patients also enjoy listening to and joining in as we recite nursery rhymes like Twinkle Little Star, One Two Buckle My Shoe, and Baa Baa Black Sheep. And recently, we added songs to entertain the patients. This Land is Your Land, Clementine, and She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain are among their favorites.  Hearing the men and women respond with “I remember that song” and ” My mother read me that story when I was a little girl,” makes the time we spend with these special people who are battling a difficult disease very worthwhile.

Winter Weather: It’s That Time of Year!

We have already gotten our first taste of winter weather this holiday season; how will you know if and when your Library will close?

The Abington Community Library’s new policy is to have an hour delay if the Abington Heights School District has a delay. If AHSD delays, look for the Library to open at 10AM instead of 9AM.

Any delays or closings will be posted on our website, Facebook, and Twitter. Do you follow us on social media? These announcements will be posted as soon as possible. If the Library is open and you are not sure whether to come out in bad weather to attend a program or to return a book, give us a call! It is always better to be safe. Call and confirm before you venture out.

Remember, the Library is open 24/7 on our website. Renew, place holds, or check out ebooks!

Happy Halloween at Your Library

This past weekend on Friday October 24, Family Storytime sponsored by the Teen Leadership Committee had a theme of “costumes.” Attending children were encouraged to dress up, and after reading stories and playing games, we closed with a parade around the Library. Here was our group:

Family Storytime Oct. 2014

On Saturday October 25, the Abington Community Library participated in trick-or-treat as part of the Abington Business & Professional Association’s Fall Fun in the Abingtons. Children stopped by the Library throughout the day to receive a special treat.

Tomorrow on Halloween, Friday October 31, make the Library one of your stops! From 6-9PM, visit Miss Laura in the children’s library in your costume for a treat.

Happy Halloween! Have a safe and spooky holiday!

A, B, C, Disgusting!

Author and illustrator Catherine Dawgert and her publisher, local company Woodland Way, just received the 2014 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award Gold Medal for Best Illustrator for one of Dawgert’s books, A, B, C, Disgusting. Congratulations!

This past July, Catherine Dawgert was here at the Library for a reading and craft time. Children enjoyed hearing from her books: A, B, C, DisgustingThe Dinglebeast Needs to Sleep, and Even In My Monster Hat. The playful illustrations and writing captivated everyone present.

Woodland Way donated Dawgert’s three picture books to the Library, where they are available for checkout in the children’s section. Woodland Way also donated 25% of profits from book sales during Dawgert’s author visit.

Resource Recommended by Families Helping Families

Families Helping Families, here at the Library on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30PM, provides support for families with a member in the early stages of recovery for drug or alcohol addition.

Interested adults and teens are not required to register for this weekly Library program, but may simply stop by and connect with other individuals who share in similar struggles.

Families Helping Families recommends the Pennsylvania Parent Forum for those interested in something more. The Parent Panel Advisory Council, in collaboration with the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, is hosting a free, day-long informational event for parents. Topics include signs/symptoms of substance abuse, how to motivate your son/daughter to get help, and how to best access treatment when needed.

The Pennsylvania Parent Forum will be held Friday, November 7, 2014 from 9AM-4PM at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg-Hershey, 6-4 Station Rd., Grantvilla, PA.

Register online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GYPWYLV or by phone at 717-783-8200 BEFORE October 25.

Cheers for Gears! Robot Crafts a Hit

Last Tuesday August 19, children ages 3-10 dropped in on Make-It, Take-It Craft time at the Library. Most children made all three crafts available: a robot mask, a robot shaker, and a robot magnet. Creativity reigned as all experimented with designs, shapes, and colors. Make-It, Take-It Craft Time is monthly at the Library; check for new themes!
