February Is Library Lovers Month

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month and April has National Library Week but, this month is dedicated to YOU, our fiction fanatics, biblio buffs, and DVD devotees!  February is National Library Lovers Month where we celebrate those who are passionate about libraries and all they do for them.  Whether your favorite library is a public building, a school room, an overflowing shelf, or a stack of media that also serves as your coffee table, libraries play a fulfilling part in your life, and you are proud to say “I <3 my library”!

With the Lackawanna County Library System’s Winter Challenge also happening this month, February is the perfect time to meet other library lovers through a variety of programs offered at each of our nine libraries.  Whether it is Oreo-tasting, BINGO, Valenslime, movie nights, or an (un)romantic book club, each library offers programs for all ages and needs.  To see what’s happening this month, check out the events page on the Library System’s website at https://lclshome.org/events/.

Novel Thoughts!

Zoom Virtual Event Children’s Library: This summer we will be talking about two popular books, Hilo: the Boy who Crashed to Earth and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library.

July 16, 23, 30 @10:30 AM: Hilo: The Boy who Crashed to Earth, written by Judd Winick, is a great graphic novel that brings together an affecting story about a young boy who doesn’t think he has anything to contribute to the world and a cracking, seat-of-your-pants adventure about rampaging robots from another dimension.

August  6, 13, 20 @10:30 AM: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, written by New York Times bestselling children’s author Chris Grabenstein, also features messages about teamwork, friendship, and leadership. It centers around Kyle Keeley, a game- and puzzle-loving 12-year-old who, though not much of a reader, wins a trip to the grand opening of his town’s new library — a library decked out with animatronics, holograms, and all manner of innovation, because it was funded by none other than eccentric game maker (and Kyle’s hero) Luigi Lemoncello.

Those who register will receive free copies of the books to keep. Stop by the library to pick up your copies. You will also receive an email of the program’s Zoom login. This will be in a secure Zoom Room.

For Tweens ages 9 and up.

Registration is required.

Space is limited to 10 students.

To RSVP, visit us or call (570) 348-3000, ext. 3015.

Second Sunday with Friends: Magician, Ran’D Shine

Magician Ran’D Shine: ‘I am very proud to be an African American magician’Ran’D Shine —See the magic at the Lackawanna County Children’s Library!                                                          Sponsored by the Friends of the Scranton Public Library

Magician Ran’D Shine, who has appeared on the CW’s Penn and Teller: Fool Us and has performed in over 20 countries, is determined to share the stories of black magicians. Like Henry “Box” Brown, a pre-Houdini magician who was born a slave in Virginia and shipped himself to Philadelphia (and freedom) in a crate. “I am very proud to be an African American magician,” Shine said. Philadelphia Inquirer, October 16, 2019

That’s why he has traveled extensively to Africa to mix magic with exploring his roots. The lessons he learned there are shouting to be shared.  Ran’D was also Magician of the Year in 2016 and has worked with Penn and Teller!
